Skinny legs :(

Hello,

I exercise fairly regularly and have what might be described as a fairly
fit looking body but my legs let the whole package down.

I know Squats are pretty much the benchmark for putting on mass but I
hate this exercise to the extent where I just do not do them. Also, I
exercise at home and do not have a spotter with me so it might be a bit
unsafe for me to even try.

Has anyone any suggestions as to alternatives which are less tiresome
and maybe a bit more safe while exercising alone, and maybe tips on how
to increase energy levels and stamina just before leg workouts?

Are Zercher Squats any good?

Don't worry, you're not unique. The vast majority of gym "enthusiasts"
are the same. Shit legs, usually hidden by wearing baggies.

"putting on mass" Ha Ha.... Seriously that ain't going to happen. "mass"
never happens but yes squats are an ESSENTIAL exercise for your whole
body development not just a legs exercise.
You can't really squat at home without a rack of some description.
I haven't trained with a spotter for over 30 years. If you have some
form of rack you can train to failure if you must but the trick is to
stop one rep before failure. If you're not sure where that point is it's
the next rep after you bust a ball to get back up because you took it a
little past the happy point.
You don't train legs because it's hard work. Training legs is a big
muscle group that consumes a lot of energy and produces a lot of waste
products of course it's going to be hard work. It's what separates the
weak from the strong. (physically AND mentally)

Hardly worth giving you any alternatives because to train legs you've
got to train legs. There is NO "easy" exercise. It never gets easy the
more you do it either as you always have to push hard right to the limit
of your capability at the time.
If your diet is crap you'll find all training difficult.
You say you have a " fairly fit body" my guess is you are simply just
not fat. You probably have a skinny-boy flat pack rather than a 6-pack
If you really want to train legs then train legs. Train them as a
priority over all other body parts. Better to do back, chest, shoulders
and legs and forget about arms and abs. Even Legs, Chest and Back before
doing legs again.
You want it or you don't. All I'm seeing is excuses from someone not
willing to put any effort into anything to achieve something more than
the rest of the un-trained masses.

Not for you with your current attitude. Long baggy trousers are what
you'd be best with.

If I toss aside the unhelpful and incorrect assumptions, references to
attitude, closing paragraph etc., etc., there seems to be some good
advice there.

You're welcome, and this IS usenet. You could try posting the same
question on MFW misc.fitness.weights if it's still there, they used to
be a very welcoming and friendly bunch.

I'm not sure what answer you're looking for, it's like asking how to
train to run a marathon without doing any distance running.

One other bit of advice I forgot to mention is that whereas legs ARE
most peoples nemesis, the use of pre-workout drinks can help give you a
greater intensity and capacity for pushing legs more. Just save it for
legs sessions when you need the extra ooomph.

Oh, I know! I just thought I would try a place I have frequented years
ago (lurker/different nicknames) and found
helpfull/witty/sarcastic/argumentative/entertaining... It doesn't seem
to be the place it once was :(

I was looking for an answer that might suggest an alternative which
might be less tiresome.

If there are absolutely no alternatives to squats with similar benefits
and possibly less fatiguing, amen, then I suppose it would not be
unreasonable to expect the answer 'No, but you could try x and y but
these exercises do not have the same benefits...'

<quote>

Not all leg exercises are as fatiguing as squats which suggests there
are other exercises (albeit not as effective) to try as alternatives. In
your opinion, what's the next best 3 to try?

Is that a better way of putting it?

There are zillions of products. I've read a few favourable reviews for
White Flood over the past month. I might splash out on a tub next pay day.

Thanks for the less assumptive reply.
